We stayed out late, and got up early. We had an agenda. It was: see all there was to see, eat all there was to eat, shop, shop, shop, show, show, collapse.
By Saturday night, when we met Corrine's friend Natalie for dinner, we were worn out! We took a list of restaurants to visit, and hit a few of them, ended up grazing most of the days, and finding all types of wonderful bakeries and treats on our outings. One of our favorite places was Amy's Bread. They have three locations: one in Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea Market and Greenwich Village. We tried several treats and also had a yummy lunch at the Greenwich location. Everything was delish. They sell a cookbook that is beautifully written, with wonderful pictures and stories about their beginning, creations, and customers who frequent their stores. I loved the book so much, I bought TWO - because, I thought, if anyone would love this book, it would be A Bountiful Kitchen reader.
I am so happy to have this collection of recipes! Can you tell I'm on a sugar high? I've been baking this morning. I'll post another "Amy's" recipe with the name of the winner, who will be selected by the random counter. Leave a post with your favorite memory (food related- of course) from summer 2009. All entries must be left by midnight Thursday, September 10th. Winner will be announced on Friday.
My favorite summer 2009 food memory has to be when I was sitting in a diner with Corrine and Brookie at about 11:30 PM after seeing a show, none of us were very hungry, but we decided to order a pizza. The waiter said "We're all out". "WHAT???" I said. "You are kidding. How can you be out of pizza?" Brooke told me to calm down. Note: Brooke just spent the whole summer working in Yellowstone, working front desk at a hotel then waiting tables, listening to cranky tourists from 7 AM till 11 PM almost every day. Ok, fine. I didn't need pizza. So, we picked another menu item. Well, actually we ordered the mac and cheese with proscuitto, the triple layer Devil's food cake with cream, and an egg cream soda. 'Cause we weren't hungry. Yeah. And we all had a good laugh.
With all of the recipes to choose from in the new cookbook, why plum cake? We have a plum tree. I don't know if it was the excessive amount of RAIN we had this spring and summer, or the cooler weather? But, the plums are HUGE. And the crop was enormous.
I had to get out the loppers (is that what they are really called, or did Grant make that up?) and cut branches, loaded with plums and drop them right into the garbage can. I think I still picked about 3 bushels. And there are still branches loaded with plums. Call me if you need any to make this cake.
Oh - the cake. It is yummy. I love the cornmeal in the cake. It's much lighter than I anticipated. More like a cake, than a coffee cake. It is melt in your mouth good when it's warm. And it's beautiful too. I just had to get up and take another bite. Tart, sweet, buttery, carmely (know it's not a word). You should put Amy's on your list of places you must eat in NYC.
Plum Upside Down Cake
Topping ingredients:
3/4 cups light brown sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter
Melt together in a small sauce pan. Boil for 2 minutes, don't over cook or mixture will get grainy. Pour into a greased 9x13 pan and set aside.
Cake ingredients:
6 to 8 small black or red plums, whole
1 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
3 tablespoons cornmeal
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
4 eggs, separated
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2/3 cup milk, whole (I used 1/3 skim, 1/3 cream)
Sugar for egg whites, 2 tablespoons
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Wash all plums, and cut in half. Pit and slice each half into 4 wedges ( I sliced into about 8, because my plums were big). Arrange the fruit, cut side down on top of the topping. Set the pan aside.
In a medium bowl, add the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together.
Ina small bowl with an electric mixer, cream the butter for cake for 1 minute, or until light. Add the sugar and continue beating for about 1 minute. Add the egg yolk and vanilla and mix 1 minute more. Add half of the flour mixture to the batter and mix briefly. Then add half the milk and mix again. Repeat until all ingredients are incorporated. Set aside. In a small bowl, beat the egg whites until frothy about 1-2 minutes. Increase speed and beat until soft peaks form. Add the 2 tablespoons sugar a little at a time and beat until stiff, but not dry. Fold about 1/4 of the whites into the cake mixture to lighten it. Gently fold in the remainder just until incorporated.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly over the topping. Place pan in center of oven and bake for 30-33 minutes. Or until blade of knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let the cake cool on wire rack for about 5-10 minutes. Run a knife around edge to loosen. Invert onto rectangular plate.
Thanks for bringing this cake back! Upside down cakes definitely take me back in time :)

ReplyDeleteOh that sounds so fun. I love NYC. My favorite food memory this summer was eating a dinner that everything except the meat was from my own garden. It was my garden not my parents. In 25 years of Marriage that is the first time ever:)

ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you found me so that I could find you!!! I am excited to follow you- you know I love your cooking! We are headed to NYC on Sunday for the week and I am going hunting for Amy's Bread. Favorite food memory of the summer..ummmm..watching our little dog, Scout, eat corn on the cob after we had stuffed ourselves with the best corn on earth, Utah sweet corn! (I had no idea a dog could eat corn on the cob.)

ReplyDeleteI guess my most memorable moment (not favorite) was when I bought a beautiful German chocolate cake for Craig's birthday, but didn't know it had walnuts in it. Isaac enjoyed two delicious bits before his mouth and lips puffed up and we were calling 911. A memorable food moment for sure. We now refer to the incident as "the poison cake".
ReplyDeleteI'm a faithful follower here, but you don't know who I am...I'm Gretchen Rinehart's roommate, does that count? I'd just love to win that cookbook! And my food memory would have to be having pulled pork sandwiches with mustard-base barbecue sauce from Melvin's in South Carolina. I've craved them constantly ever since...the mustard BBQ sauce is definitely the way to go!

My favorite memory from this summer was the rainy day that my daughter, husband and I went to pick blueberries. We had the entire patch to ourselves and even though we got very wet, we enjoyed the privacy, the quiet and the sweet berries! Thank you ;-)

My TWO favorite food memories where both involving the chocolate cake recipe you have on your blog. I made it first for my son's 1st Birthday, SUCH A HIT!!! My sister then asked me, if there was another specail occasion coming up, so that I could bake it again. I used Vanilla Buttercream frosting instead. My sceond was just 3 nights ago when I baked the very same cake, only this time I added chopped semi sweet chocolate to the filling and frosted it with the Vanilla Buttercream. Huge hit, yet again.
ReplyDeleteI have been asked now several times to open my own shop...all thanks to your cake recipe and many other DELICIOUS recipes I find on your blog.
PLEASE LET ME WIN THIS COOK BOOK! Im a fiend when it comes to recipes!!!!!! I adore your blog more than any other.
First I want to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I have tried so many of your recipes and love every one! My favorite summer food memory was sitting at Fisherman's Wharf eating the most incredible clam chowder with three of my favorite boys Mark, Dan and Sam.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite summer food memory was making several kinds of yummy cupcakes and creating a beautiful presentation with my friends for a baby shower. Food can be soooooo beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOoh, my favorite food memory this summer is actually from late spring, and it's from New York, coincidentally. I went for the first time to visit my friend who was living in the city. We ate ourselves nuts: Cookies the size of my extended hand at Levain Bakery, waiting for a Magnolia cupcake, eating a Billy's cupcake, and so on. A lot of cupcakes. Anyway, as everyone must, we waited diligently in line for pizza at Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. 35 minutes, but once seated in the bustling, over-crowded little hole in the wall, we ordered our pizza margherita and waited. It came sizzling and was set at eye level. I pulled a slice, folded it in half and took a bite. It was truly everything and more that I imagined. Fresh, hot, the perfect melding of a few simple ingredients - heaven. I fantasize about that pizza...
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory is when we had a family reunion and grilled a ton of veggies and made a pasta salad out of them. So good and wonderful to share great food with family.
ReplyDeleteI almost missed this! My favorite food memory from this summer....hmmmm I can't remember eating. It would have to be at a barbeque, any one because I LOVE all the salads and sides that come along with it. My second favorite is everything you have made that I have eaten!
ReplyDeleteI have heard such wonderful reviews of Amy's Bread!! Anywho, my fav food memory of this summer would have to be my hubby and I having our B-Day party. It was FULL of yummy food. From the BBQ scallops wrapped in bacon and basted with Catalina dressing to the tray of tasty treats at the end from Gourmandise. I hope I win!! Thanks for all the great posts here!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory of food...hmmmm, so many to choose from, but I think this one tops my list. A few weeks ago my hubby and I went to Julie and Julia. There is a terrific scene where Julie is making bruschetta, and as they are eating it, they keep say "yum." It did look YUMMY. So my husband and I have been making it (just like Julie did) a couple of times a week! The first time we made it we couldn't believe how yummy it turned out!
ReplyDeleteRemember your April 1st post? That is what my favorite food related memory this summer is about - chicken feet. Well the food (chicken feet) wasn't actually for me, but for Junior the Jaguar. We were at the Belize Zoo and got to get inside a little cage that was inside of Junior's cage. We were all able to pet the jaguar. The men got to have their foreheads licked by Junior and then the women got to wave a chicken foot around and make Junior do somersaults and then feed him the chicken foot. It was unforgettable!
